Jasmine Yellow Tea – Rare Chinese Yellow Tea with Jasmine

Jasmine Yellow Tea brings together two Chinese tea traditions: rare yellow tea and the sweet, floral perfume of jasmine. The result is a mellow, buttery cup with a soft jasmine bouquet and a lingering sweet aftertaste. Don't be surprised by the long, twisted dark leaves with golden tips: this is how our yellow tea looks before it unfurls in the pot.

Taste and Aroma

  • Aroma: fresh jasmine blossom over a warm, honeyed leaf
  • Flavor: mellow, smooth and lightly vegetal, without the grassy bite of many green teas
  • Mouthfeel: round and buttery
  • Liquor: clear golden-yellow
  • Finish: sweet and gently floral

Origin and Craft

Yellow tea is made only in China and is one of the rarest tea types. It starts like green tea, then the warm, damp leaves are wrapped and left to slowly “yellow” before the final drying. This extra step softens the leaf and brings out sweetness and mellowness. The tea is then scented with jasmine, adding a delicate floral layer to the smooth base.

How to Brew

  • Water: 185°F / 85°C
  • Amount: 1 heaping teaspoon (about 2-3 g) per 8 oz / 250 ml
  • Time: 2-3 minutes
  • Infusions: re-steep the same leaves 2-3 times, adding 30-60 seconds each time

Iced or cold brew: steep 2 teaspoons in 16 oz / 500 ml of cool water in the fridge for 6-8 hours, then strain. Or brew it hot at double strength and pour over ice.

A little steeping tipLet just-boiled water cool for a minute or two — water that’s too hot can turn delicate leaves bitter. Good leaves give a lovely second cup, too.

Very tasty, a personal favorite. Shares some orchid notes and oolong qualities, while being essentially distinct. Also has an enjoyable nutty flavor like some quality green teas. Actually once over-steeped this by maybe 10 minutes, and the flavor was deep and lacked any bitter or astringent qualities, usual to that condition
